Gross, Not the Bank Credit: TDS is a prepayment

TDS is not a cost - it is a prepayment of your own tax, deposited against your PAN and creditable against your final liability, refundable where it exceeds it. Book the bank credit as income and two things happen at once: income is understated by the TDS, and the TDS credit is abandoned. On 10,00,000 of gross fees with 75,000 of TDS, the first shows 15,000 less tax at 20% and the second throws away the whole 75,000 - a net 60,000 lost, with the abandoned credit five times the apparent saving. The third error is not reconciling: if the statement shows 68,000 against your 75,000, claiming yours invites a query and claiming theirs quietly donates 7,000.
